Incredible and Wonderful New Season Coming Up

We are looking forward so much to making music with you this year.  There is so much happening with conductor Thomas Jones, after such a successful season last year.

New Concert Master

Christian Robinson has been confirmed as our concert master for next year, and has been busy preparing music getting the bowing done since mid-July.  We are looking forward to his being the concert master for the full season.

New Rehearsal Date – Wednesday Rehearsals

There had been a lot of requests for mid-week rehearsals, rather than weekend rehearsals, and this year we are moving rehearsals to Wednesday evenings at 6:30 , still the same place, Widdifield Secondary School on 320 Ski Club Road .  Attendance is very important, along with showing up early to allow you time to set up, tune and warm-up before the rehearsal starts.

New Concert Weekend Schedule – Saturday Afternoon

On concert weekends, we formerly had the Friday evening rehearsal, a sound check or mini-rehearsal on Saturday evening and then the concert.  We noted that concerts went much better with a full run-through on Saturday afternoon.  This year, we will have the Friday evening rehearsal as before, and then a Saturday afternoon rehearsal at 1:00 in the Capitol Centre, with the concert at 8:00.  This gives players a chance to relax before the concert as well.

North Bay Symphony String School – Continuing Well

The NBSO string school started last year, with teacher Jordan Wyshniowsky.  It is doing well, but there are openings for additional students – if you know anyone who wants to learn to play or to play better, please call Jordan at (705)-498-7744.

New Players Needed

We always have a turn-over of musicians.  If you know of new players who you think would be able and would enjoy playing with us, please let Don Clysdale (752-2335) or Janet Zimbalatti (840-5157) know.

Player Bios

To help our audience get to know our players better, we will be putting up short bios with pictures on the screen before concerts.  Pam Brotherston, an NBSO board member in the bassoon section, will be collecting information on all of us.

Music for the 2007-2008 Season

The music for the upcoming season has been decided and we already have most of it.  The hope is to be able to distribute music early for those who want extra practice.  There will also be extra rehearsals long in advance to start on major pieces – Beethoven's 5th Symphony in February is one of the highlights.  An extra advantage – we know now what parts are needed for what concerts.  The list of music planned is at the end of the newsletter.

Garden Tour Thank You's

The garden tour was very wet this year, and revenues were down, but still over $1800.  Many, many thanks to the musicians that played in garages, car-ports, porches or wherever they could find a dry spot.  It was greatly appreciated by all.

Bingo

We operate a charity bingo several times a month – this is a MAJOR fundraiser for the orchestra, bringing in about 20% of our annual revenue.  Help is very important here – if you know someone who can help on a Wednesday evening, please contact Janet Zimbalatti (840-5157) or the symphony office at 497-7744.

Grade 4 Program

The orchestra’s Grade 4 program has been very successful for the last two years.  Last year, we visited 32 classrooms, introducing strings, woodwinds and brass instruments.  Janet and Mary Thornton have been working on a Grade 5 program as well.  The school programs have been very popular with the schools, students and sponsors.

NBSO'S Working Board – Thank You

The NBSO administration is almost entirely done by volunteers.   Community Development Coordinator Paul Baker is our half-time employee, and is responsible for much of our growth in funding and audience.  He brings them in, and we are responsible for bringing them back.  The board members do so much work making the orchestra run smoothly – President Janet Zimbalatti (violin),  VP Don Clysdale (viola), Treasurer Robert Palangio (Choir Director), Secretary Ruth Taylor, Mike Arthurs (violin), Pam Brotherston (bassoon), Bob Franklin, Lanny James (violin), Don Redshaw, Brenda Smith, Adele Williams and Rosalind Zimbalatti.  They are the people whose efforts, along with many other volunteers, make the orchestra happen and give us such a wonderful opportunity to play.

Cogeco Tapings

Cogeco will be again taping our concerts to replay on their cable channel.  Player release (verbal) is required for this (confirmed at Friday rehearsal, please let me know in advance of any concern).  Also, they play to show a special of the orchestra, and need a release to reshow excerpts of tapings from last year's December and February concerts.  Please let me know (Don – 752-2335) of any concerns.

Potential Chamber Music Events

For those playing in small ensembles on their own, there are more opportunities to perform.  The Inn on the Bay will be holding an NBSO fundraiser dinner, and we like to have musicians playing.  A few other opportunities are in the works.
